Advanced monitoring of carbon mineralisation reactions
Summary
Carbon mineralisation offers a pathway for the permanent storage of CO₂ by converting it into stable solid materials. However, scaling a reactor requires kinetic data that the field has largely lacked.
This know-how provides an advanced measurement and monitoring approach that enables improved understanding of mineralisation reactions and the factors affecting their performance. The resulting insights can support the optimisation, design and scale-up of carbon mineralisation processes, helping to improve their efficiency and commercial viability. Laboratory studies have demonstrated the ability to obtain valuable process information in a timely manner, facilitating more effective process development and operation.
Carbon abatement potential is delivered indirectly but significantly: knowing the kinetics is what allows a mineralisation process to be sized, optimised and scaled with confidence.
What makes this novel compared to best-in-class technology?
Mineralisation research usually infers reaction speed indirectly and after the event. This method measures it directly and continuously, and identifies which conditions control it.
