Remote, real-time grid services from battery storage
Summary
Energy Management System (EMS) software running on an industrial programmable logic controller (PLC) and using the open OPC UA communication standard, allowing a power system operator to remotely control and monitor energy storage systems (ESS) for grid ancillary services.
Achievements: validated on a 1 MWh ESS testbed connected to the Singapore Power grid (415 V) at the Electrification and Power Grids Centre (EPGC), Jurong Island. Remote operator commands executed frequency regulation (automatic generation control signals at 1-4 s intervals), contingency reserve (e.g., a continuous 76 kW discharge for 30 min on a 199 kWh battery) and demand response profiles, with real-time AC-side, DC-side and cell-level data (state of charge, state of health, voltage, current, temperature) logged at 1 s resolution. Can be extended to power smoothing and virtual power plants integrating solar PV and fuel cells.
Carbon abatement potential is indirect: lets storage deliver grid-balancing services, supporting higher penetration of intermittent solar.
What makes this novel compared to best-in-class technology?
Traditional EMS platforms rely on static algorithms and local control. This software provides open-protocol, wireless, real-time remote dispatch and cell-level monitoring of storage for multiple ancillary services, proven on a grid-connected 1 MWh testbed.
