Other Novel and Emerging Decarbonisation Technologies
Advancing high-temperature industrial heat electrification, step-change improvements in industrial energy efficiency, and novel technologies to decarbonise hard-to-abate industrial processes.

Decarbonising hard-to-abate industrial processes
Decarbonising Singapore’s industry sector requires innovative solutions beyond conventional approaches. Many industrial processes rely on high-temperature heat, often exceeding 800°C, which is typically generated using fossil fuels. Electrification of these processes could significantly reduce emissions, provided technologies can deliver the required temperatures efficiently and cost-effectively.
Improving energy efficiency is another important pathway, particularly for Singapore’s existing industrial facilities. As many of these are brownfield sites with established infrastructure, there is a need for technologies that can deliver step-change improvements in energy efficiency, rather than incremental gains, while remaining practical to integrate into existing operations.
We are also open to other emerging technologies with the potential to address hard-to-abate emissions. These include novel approaches to long-term CO₂ storage, such as gas hydrates, and alternative chemistries that can reduce emissions from semiconductor manufacturing processes.
R&D proposals that can cost-effectively decarbonise Singapore’s industries at scale will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. These could include, but are not limited to, the following challenges:
Electrification of Industrial Heat
Provision of high temp heating (>800oC)
Energy Efficiency
Step change improvements in energy efficiency suited to brownfield facilities
Other Novel Technologies
Gas hydrates for CO2 storage & alternative chemistries for semiconductor manufacturing processes
